Who Are We?...
We're the Toy Dog Group

We're the Toy Group, some of the smallest dogs recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club). And our breeds are as diverse as our countries of origins.

Some of us originated in such countries as China, Cuba, England, and Australia. We were bred to sit on the laps of nobility, or hunt small animals and rats. And some of us were bred to be companions, or perform in the circus. We're the smaller versions of working or hunting dogs.

Since we're too small to actually do any work, our main purpose is to be pampered and spoiled. In fact, we're just content to be the object of your affection. Pick an adjective to describe us...cute, adorable, cuddly, devoted, lovable, yippy, yappy, snippy, or snappy...and chances are you'd be right.

Our Training and Socialization Needs

As Toy Group dogs, our small size is an advantage to an owner who wants a dog that's easy to handle on a leash. We know you'd much rather walk a dog, than have a dog walk you. We generally catch on quickly with housetraining and obedience, but may require your patience and persistence at times. It's a very good idea to socialize us at an early age, we need to feel comfortable around larger dogs, new people and places. Train us well and we'll be your perfect companion.

What Are Our Good Points?

We're small, intelligent dogs with unique personalities who thrive on human company and are very loyal. Because of our size, we make great apartment dogs. We're a great breed for empty nesters, older adults, or retirees. And we're ready to go wherever you go. Compared to larger breeds, the cost of feeding us is lower. We do like to walk and exercise, but don't need as much as the larger dogs.

What Are Our Not So-Good Points?

Sometimes some of our breeds can be a bit stubborn, headstrong, and maybe a bit high-strung. If you've ever seen the Chihuahua in action, you'll know what a little spitfire he can be. Some of us need your constant attention and affection and will follow you around.

Sometimes our barks can be described as "yippy" or "yappy", but we prefer the term "effective". We make good watchdogs, and will always alert you to something that needs your attention.

Don't take us lightly-we're not pushovers. We need owners who will take charge, otherwise we could become a domestic dictator and rule the house!

Are We Kid Friendly?

As dogs in the Toy Group, we're generally not the best dogs for very young children. Because of their inquisitive nature and lack of experience, younsters could provoke us and we might become nippy. We also run the risk of injury if play becomes too rough. We'll do ok with older children who know how to handle and act around small dogs.

Are We Hypoallergenic?

Some of our breeds in the Toy Group are prone to shedding, which might cause allergy sufferers to experience symptoms. The AKC has singled out the Chinese Crested, as one dog that allergy sufferers might want to consider.
